Throughout the 1900s, Itasca grew to be home to over 10,000 residents and the overall growth and development of the area has been controlled by the Comprehensive Plan first adopted in 1942. Most of Itasca’s neighborhoods straddled the railroad tracks running through the village. This what the town into the “Northside” and “Southside”. There are two unincorporated neighborhoods west of Rohlwing Rd., Nordic Hills, and Ranchettes. There are four main railroad crossings in the area from west to east and several others in the neighboring industrial parks. The downtown area consists of Walnut Street between Bloomingdale Road and Division Street. Here you’ll find a few restaurants, bakeries, the train station, and if you boutiques and shops. The major landmarks include the Itasca Baptist Church, Usher Park, a beautiful Riverwalk and Gigi Gruber Lane, a tribute to former mayor Gigi Gruber.
Prior to 1995, Itasca’s school district had just one elementary school on each side of town but today, there are several schools in the Itasca Public School District 10. These include the Elmer H Franzen intermediate school, the FE Peacock middle school, and the Raymond Benson Primary School. The Lake Park District 108 also serve parts of Itasca.
